Perry Alden Sawyer graduated from
Hackensack High School in 1938 and was inducted into the Hackensack High School sports Hall of Fame in 1973. 

After graduating Amherst College in 1942, he enlisted in the Air Force, where he served on a B-17 as a radio operator and gunner over Italy and received the
Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters.
